Hahna Smiley Pink Wig Briggs
on 06 April 2011
I am one of two coordinators for the South Island Dance Network (SIDN) and as you can tell from the photos I am smiley and I like to wear pink wigs.
But I am much more than a smiley wig wearing dance coordinator. I teach dance, perform and choreograph, I research and write about dance, I watch dance and attend local dance classes. Dance has been a part of my life since I was five years old and continues to be a part of my recreation, my work, and my study. Dance provides for me a voice; an avenue to express what is impossible for me to express through words.
Because I live for dance I am passionate about helping to grow and sustain a South Island dance community. I also want to let the whole world know about the range of dance opportunities in their backyard (by world I mean the South Island).

What have I been up to since becoming the SIDN coordinator?
I list dance classes, events, workshops, companies and groups, auditions, services, retail, and venues on the SIDN website. Listing information on the website is totally FREE. If you want some extra promotion by placing an ad on our website banner ad spots, there is a small fee.
I write and design a monthly newsletter, which promotes new website listings, upcoming events, workshops, meetings, scholarships....so basically up to date information about what’s happening in South Island communities. The newsletter also features a dancer profile each month.
I keep informed about opportunities, such as dance fellowships or festivals that are outside of the South Island so that I can pass this information onto people via the newsletter and website.
I provide one on one advice to members of the general public. For instance on Friday I will be visiting the Community Care Trust to talk to members and staff about what dance classes are available in Dunedin. I often get emails from people who have just moved into town and would like recommendations on dance classes and groups.
I am on the Getting Dunedin Active committee, a committee focused on getting all people active and living healthy.
I have written articles for the DANZ quarterly magazine about local events, such as Invercargill’s Dance Your Southern Sox Off and Dance Otakou’s International Dance Day celebrations.
I coordinate the primary school programme, Dancing like the Stars. This is an eight week programme where local dance teachers go into primary schools to teach their specialised area of dance. This programme has been running in Christchurch for four years and will run in Dunedin for the first time in 2011. The aim is to eventually run the programme all over New Zealand.
I sometimes I get real hands on. I was a volunteer for the 2010 Tertiary Dance Festival and was given the job of playing the music at Dance Otakou's International Dance Day celebrations, a job which I have gladly accepted again this year. I have also been asked to co-judge the Smoke Free Stage Challenge in Dunedin.
So apart from wearing pink wigs and smiling a lot I also do heaps of dance related support and coordination. Please contact me today to discuss how I can help you!
