South Island Dance Network

Dancing Like the Stars is a nine-week, in-school dance program aimed at low-decile schools around Dunedin.  The programme aims to offer kids an alternative to traditional sport while encouraging active lifestyles, improved communication and relationship skills, and increased self-esteem and confidence. We are seeking experienced dance teachers to tutor at eight primary schools, each with a different style.  The programme consists of eight weeks of three one-hour sessions per week, teaching basic technique for the first four weeks and choreographing a routine for the last four weeks to a single class of 10 and 11 year olds.  The ninth week is a performance night in which all the schools and their tutors perform.  Given the programme's emphasis on interpersonal relationships, dance styles which have or can have partnering or touching elements built in are preferred (this doesn't mean simply partner dance styles; contemporary, bollywood, and jazz have all been used in the past as well as salsa, ballroom, and ceroc).  This is a paid position which would commence in term 2 of 2012 (end of april).
